These Mawata Silk Hankies are 25 cm X 25cm, and have been hand painted by me. They are cocoons that have been soaked in warm, soapy water and stretched over a frame that is square (approx 25 cm square). Several cocoons are stretched over the frame so that each hankie is composed of several layers, each containing the silk fibres of one cocoon. Mawata is Japanese for ‘spread out’ and refers to the expansion of the cocoon.
They can be used for felting, but also can be used for spinning, knitting and card making.
